How do you use photoshop to dissect a animated gif image?

I’v heard that you can open a gif with photoshop and edit each frame but when i try i get an error saying "this is an animated gif. You can view one frame. saving over this file will result in a loss of information?" is this passable or should i try something else to edit the gif with?

You have to have Photoshop CS2 or higher to be able to do it:
-Go to File>Import>Video Frames to Layers.
-When the window pops up for you to choose your file, type *.* then click the "load" button. Now you can see all the file types in the window.
-Find and open your animated GIF, and press OK to the window that pops up.
-Now each frame of the animation has it’s own layer.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Photoshop can import the actual animation (timeline).

Photoshop sadly can not load the frames from a .gif. What you can do it use another program like VirtualDub(which is free). Load up VirtualDub, drop the gif into it, then go to File > Export > Image Sequence. That sequence can then be loaded into PS.
