How do animators animate? (I don’t mean how to animate on the computer…)?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I don’t mean how to make animations on the computer…
I mean…how do I say this…?
Do people animate by drawing every single frame, or do they put the body parts on different ‘layers’ in an animation program and move them accordingly, kinda like puppet…? How do some animations look so smooth? (without fidgetty lines)

If we are talking classic animation, yes that is done by drawing every single frame. On the PC there are programs where you set so called key frames and the program moves the models (puppets) from one state to the next. As for the second part of your question, the illusion of motion is created because our eye cant keep up with every single picture, so if you change the picture quickly enough (more than 16 pictures per second) it appears to be moving…

What kind of paper do Disney animators use where they draw step by step and flip to make it move?

Do they use tracing paper or what kind is it called?

Animators use special paper, the major distributor and manufacture is chromacolour http://www.chromacolour.com/

Chromacolour Prograde 18lb is one of the brand names and type. http://www.chromacolour.com/store/animation-paper-ca.htm

You can use regular paper or tracing paper if you are starting out. just make sure that the paper is punched or registered. You will also need a registration device like a peg bar or bull dog clip.

Simply put your drawings should not move around when drawing or capturing them.

There really is no standard of paper, it varies per studio. If you are working at a Disney TV studio it may just be regular paper that the artist punches with a hole punch machine (ACME Hole Punch ). Some artists prefer heavier paper and others more transparent and will often ask their production manger to purchase a certain type.

The hole punch machine (ACME Hole Punch) for someone starting out it terribly expensive and I would not recommend it unless you are running a business. Usually if you are a freelance artist or a student there will be one available to use if you choose not to get pre punched paper,

How much do animators make in California?

My boyfriend is finishing his degree in Media Arts and Animation and has a job lined up at Disney once he graduates (his cousin has been working there for 25+ years and was able to pull some strings). What is the average starting wage, either hourly or yearly, for this type of job?

Thank you

Disney traditionally pays less than any other place, they figure the prestige makes up for the difference (I’ve heard complaints from two people on this who used to work for them). Pixar would pay higher.

You can go to the web sites and look at their ‘job opportunites’ section for the pay scale, or you can google ‘working for Disney’ for some of the sites up about that. It should be a living wage, but not one that will have you rolling in dough, especially someone starting off new at this.

Designers, animators what is your opinion of free 3D software: Blender?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I very good in all adobe products but is the interface easy to learn? Can I import into CS 3 (including Flash)? What is the learning curve?

Powerful, and like any other 3d package (paid or otherwise), you need to spend some time to get to grips with Blender. Another (free) option would be Truespace 7.6:

Used to be quite expensive, and is now free to download. But again, you really need to invest some time in any of these.

Do the animators for SpongeBob Squarepants have a saggy breast fetish?

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

I figured being underwater and all it would relieve breasts of their natural enemy…gravity. I’ve got a few fetishes of my own but saggy breasts are not one of them. What gives?

Ha ha! I too have noticed a plethora of saggy breasts on SpongeBob. But notice that it’s usually old women, which I guess is anatomically correct, for the most part.

Drawing speed and accuracy exercises for animators?

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

I’m really starting to get into hand drawn animation after being heavily involved in CG, but find myself sketching either slower than I should be or producing not so up to par images per page (at least to my standard, which is pretty high). What do most animators do to really boost up the level of rendering and speed in their work?
