Is there a website that can keep an amateur animator informed of different submission contests?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

My brother is an amateur animator who’d like to find more places to submit his work. Any ideas?

Have him check these out, if he hasn’t already.

What college do I have to go to and what do I need to learn to become a video game designer/animator ?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I live in Chicago, and I am headed toward my goal to become a videogame designer/animator. What school can I go to or where would I have to go, so I can learn to fulfill my dream and be a video game designer/animator? Any help or information would be great thank you…

First, designer and animation are two completely different things. Read here for more info. http://www.adigitaldreamer.com/articles/becomeavideogamedesigner.htm

There’s the Programmer, who deals with all the numbers and such. Extensive software and computer knowledge is required for this.

Then we have the Music staff that icludes voice actors, composers and such. We also have the Graphics team, that focuses on 3D design and so on.

There are plenty of other jobs, and they vary by company. A team can consist from 20 to 200 people working on a single game.
I’m not really sure what designers do, but what I know is that they need problem solving skills and such.

What is it like working as a Disney animator?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Not for pixar, but traditionally hand-drawn animation.
What is it like being a part of all that anonymity? I mean, they always put the movie is by Disney and it’s not like all the animator’s names are there in big letters in the opening credits.
If you are a Disney animator or know a friend, family member, etc.

Hardly anything is hand-drawn anymore. The majority of animation is done through computer, even the 2d stuff.

I also know that Glen Keane was an important Disney animator… just because they’re unknown to the public doesn’t mean they’re unknown to everyone! Animators love their jobs so much, they don’t care that they’re not credited in the headlines.

In terms of hand-drawn animations, there are keyframe animators and there are tween-animators, who animate the bits between the important keyframes. The keyframe animators will draw one image in every 12-24 frames (every .5 - 1 second) and the tween-animators draw everything in-between.

In-between animators were paid much less, even though they did the most work. They did 12-24 times the drawings as the keyframe animators.

Nowadays, the animators will do the keyframes in the computer, and the computer will figure out the in-between movement. It makes for MUCH faster animation, and less expensive.

Being an animator is not an easy life. You’ve got to be the actor AND the artist, capturing the look that the voice of the actor has given you. And you’ve got a director telling you how they want it to look, and a character designer telling you how the character should move and look. It’s a team effort, but being part of that effort is incredibly rewarding for certain people.

How much does a beginner 3d gaming animator earn?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

What is a free, easy-to-use animator that uses true color?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I’d like to do a couple simple animations, maybe .gifs, using paint, but when I save .gifs, the picture becomes discolored. Is there a free animator that doesn’t use .gifs, or is there a way to prevent my gifs from becoming discolored?

I sometimes use a program called "Pivot Stickfigure Animator" Obviously, it’s for stick figures, but it’s easy and free.
But if you make separate body parts, it won’t look as stickfigure-y

How do I become a pixar animator?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I’m 14 and about to go to high school and I want to be an animator preferably on Pixar. I want to know what kind of degree I need to do so. I heard there was a Pixar College but I don’t know if that’s true. Also if you know how do you become a character please tell. Thank you.

I am about to graduate from Art Institute of Dallas in the Media Arts and Animation program. Pixar has extremely high standards so it’s good that you have decided this early so you will have a head start. You need a degree in animation, and I do not believe there is a Pixar college- I have several teachers who worked there, haha. A character animator is basically an actor with knowledge of the principles of animation. I would recommend studying all kinds of animation, it will only make you a stronger artist. We use a program called Maya.
Some good animation schools to look into would be CalArts, Savannah, and Ringling.
