What did walt disney use to animate his steamboat willie movie?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Did he use a zoetrope? And how did he make it into a film? Like how was it played wen he had it all together and animated?

"Disney used Pat Powers’ Cinephone system, created by Powers using Lee De Forest’s Phonofilm system without giving De Forest any credit."

"In June 1927, Powers made an unsuccessful takeover bid for DeForest’s company. In the aftermath, Powers hired a former DeForest technician, William Garrity, to produce a cloned version of the Phonofilm system, which Powers dubbed Powers Cinephone. By now, DeForest was in too weak a financial position to mount a legal challenge against Powers for patent infringement. Powers convinced Walt Disney to use Cinephone for a few sound cartoons such as Steamboat Willie (1928) before Powers and Disney had a falling-out over money — and over Powers hiring away Disney animator Ub Iwerks — in 1930. Cinephone continued to be used in low-budget Westerns through 1930, and in Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons — including Flowers and Trees and The Whoopee Party — through 1932."

Hope I could help! ºoº

How do you animate in 2D and what is a good program for 2D animation?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I’m new to animating videos and I want to start off with 2D animation. Do you know of any good 2D animation programs that work, is fairly cheap, and is good for beginners? Also, does anyone have any tips for animating?

Flash is good from time to time for 2D animations but there have been some books that suggest ToonBoom for these kind of things. The best tip I can give you is that if you are going to create an animation is to first create a storyboard of how you want things to come together — a storyboard is like a rough layout of your project. The Complete Guide to Anime Techniques is a helpful book because it has a section on some animation software for 2D and 3D animations. There is also a chart towards the back with a chart giving information on the software along with the price for each one. The link below shows what the book looks like. There are also some links that will be helpful as well within the book. The book maybe available at your local library.

I need to animate a regular JPEG image. I used to do it in ImageReady but now I hear that the tools available in imageready can now be found in Photoshop.

So how do I use these tools and create different frames to make an animated image?

♦ Put each frame of your video on a separate layer
♦ Window > Animation to open the Animation Palette
♦ Click the tiny trinangle in at the top right of the pallette
♦ Select Make Frames from Layers
♦ Set looping option
♦ Choose File > Export > Render Video

How can you animate cloth in 3ds max?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

I have seen videos of characters interacting with cloth and i want to know how they animate that.
Like, you get a character picking up a hankie or a character making a bed or toweling their face or touching their cloak. Can that be done in 3ds max and how?
Are there any tutorials for that kind of stuff?

See the "Hair and Cloth" tutorial, it’s pretty good.
Basically, you use the Garment Maker modifier to create meshed surfaces suitable for cloth simulation out of shapes, and then use the cloth modifier to simulate its cloth properties.
You don’t really need Reactor unless you want to simulate the cloth’s effect on other objects (e.g. a ball bouncing on a trampoline).

How do I animate the special effects found in Sony Vegas Pro 8?

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

I click on the effect, then I go preview it and the effect is frozen, not animated like it should be.

All three are helpful when dealing with Sony Vegas Pro. You have to animate them using key frames. The first two tutorials are really good at explaing it, even if it’s for lower thirds. Same concept though.

How to animate motion effect in powerpoint such that arrow moves and follow specified path direction?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Please share your idea how to make an arrow moves in a specified curve path wherein its arrow behaves in proper direction.

Thanks.

I would start with the motion path first.

Then to have the arrow actually look like it is going on the path with the arrowhead pointing in the direction of the path at all times (I think that’s what you want), I would use Add Emphasis and choose Rotate (sorry, I’m on a computer that doesn’t have PowerPoint, so I’m doing this from memory - the terms may not be quite right, but hopefully close enough.

You can set the rotation clockwise or counterclockwise for a certain degree. Figure out how far the arrow needs to rotate for that section of the path. Make sure the effect is set for With Previous.

Right click in the Custom Animation palette and select Show Advanced Timeline. Take a guess at how long that first movement needs to run for and pull the rotation time. Test and reset the time.

Then do the same thing again for the next segment of the line - Add Emphasis - Rotation - start AFTER Previous and play around with the timing.

Depending on how complex your curve is, you might be able to accomplish this with one or two rotations. I couldn’t swear it will be perfect and smooth (I wish I could test it), but I think it could work.

On the path Effect Options, I’d be inclined to turn OFF smooth start and smooth end so that the speed is consistent.
