What did walt disney use to animate his steamboat willie movie?
Did he use a zoetrope? And how did he make it into a film? Like how was it played wen he had it all together and animated?
"Disney used Pat Powers’ Cinephone system, created by Powers using Lee De Forest’s Phonofilm system without giving De Forest any credit."
"In June 1927, Powers made an unsuccessful takeover bid for DeForest’s company. In the aftermath, Powers hired a former DeForest technician, William Garrity, to produce a cloned version of the Phonofilm system, which Powers dubbed Powers Cinephone. By now, DeForest was in too weak a financial position to mount a legal challenge against Powers for patent infringement. Powers convinced Walt Disney to use Cinephone for a few sound cartoons such as Steamboat Willie (1928) before Powers and Disney had a falling-out over money — and over Powers hiring away Disney animator Ub Iwerks — in 1930. Cinephone continued to be used in low-budget Westerns through 1930, and in Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons — including Flowers and Trees and The Whoopee Party — through 1932."
Hope I could help! ºoº

I think he used a process of triple planing. Each movement of Mickey or object in the scene was painted by hand on celluloid sheets or "cells" The foreground where Mickey was was placed on a machine that had three panes of glass layered one on top the other several inches apart and a camera mounted above those to shoot the film The mid-background scene that maybe didnt change as much was placed on the middle pane while the deep background that didn’t change at all mostly was placed on the third.
This process or placement of the cells, when filmed from above gave the scene depth. One frame of film was shot each time the the cell was changed. Sometimes the deep background changed so a new "cell" was put onto the bottom plane. Everytime a cell was changed a new frame of film was shot. And I think every 26 frames of film showed up as one sec. of movie time. A very long, and very expensive process.
I hope that helps some.
