How can I animate keyblades on my compputer?

I saw some animated keyblades before. I want to know how to do that. So someone please give me advice! Please!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw some 3 - D animated keyblades before. I just need some help to do that. Anyone have any advice?
I also want to know what layers are. What are the?

Use Photoshop or Gimp (free at gimp.org)
Make sure you use lots of layers.
I’m not really sure how to explain it….
