If you're new to 3d, Blender might be a bit daunting at first. It is a very good app, though, once you get into it.

You can get fast results in organic modelling with CB Model Pro:

http://www.cbmodelpro.com/

There's a free beta available, which, when you register reamins free to use, and it is really a lot of fun & easy to work in. The result can be exported into Blender or any other app.

However, should you wish to animate your character, you'll have to 'rig' it. Something like that should be done in an 3d animation program like Blender, Cinema4D, Lightwave3D, Maya, SoftImage or 3ds Max. Take your pick (not an exhaustive list!).

All of these programs have scores of tutorials relating to rigging on the net. It takes time to learn, but it is truly worth seeing your character come to life!

Cheers!
References :
I would suggest using the FREE, very professional animation program called "Blender" to accomplish this.

Get it here..................
